We visited the Port of Rotterdam, the largest port in Europe, and we did it the best way possible — from the water. We hopped on a boat and sailed through the port, surrounded by massive cargo ships, cranes, and an infrastructure that is hard to believe until you see it up close. We also attended a talk that gave us a deeper understanding of how this incredible place actually works.
Europe’s biggest port, up close
The Port of Rotterdam is not just big. It is enormous. Stretching for kilometres along the river Nieuwe Maas, it handles millions of tonnes of cargo every single year. From the boat, you get a sense of the true scale of it all — something you simply cannot feel from land. Giant container ships, tugboats, and endless rows of cranes moving in perfect coordination.
A talk that changed the way we see it
Before or after the boat ride, we attended a presentation about the port’s history, its role in the global economy, and its plans for the future. It was fascinating to learn how Rotterdam became the trade heart of Europe and how it continues to innovate, from sustainable energy to fully automated terminals.
